What is FSC?
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international, non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests.
FSC is a global network of members, staff, certificate holders, promotional licence holders and responsible consumers. By working together, we can help to ensure that we use forests and forest products responsibly, shifting the global forest trend towards sustainable use, conservation, restoration, and respect for all.
Since its foundation in 1994, FSC has grown to cover more than 200 million hectares of forest. It is thus no wonder that FSC has become the world’s most respected and widespread forest certification system.
FSC: The world’s most trusted sustainable forest management certification
FSC forest management certification confirms that the forest is being managed in a way that preserves biological diversity. Furthermore, it must benefit the lives of local people and workers, while ensuring it sustains economic viability. FSC certified forests are managed to strict environmental, social and economic standards. There are ten principles that any forest operation must adhere to before it can receive FSC forest management certification. These principles cover a broad range of issues: from maintaining high conservation values to community relations and workers’ rights. They also include monitoring the environmental and social impacts of the forest management.
FSC certified products – Chain of Custody
The FSC chain of custody (CoC) is the path taken by products from the forest, or in the case of recycled materials from the moment when the material is reclaimed. It ends at the point where the product is sold with an FSC claim and/or it is finished and FSC labelled. The CoC includes each stage of sourcing, processing, trading, and distribution where progress to the next stage of the supply chain involves a change of product ownership.
What do FSC certified products mean for you?
Many suppliers will tell you, often in good faith, that their supplies are from ‘sustainable’ or ‘managed’ sources. But without credible certification there is often no way to know if products have indeed been sourced responsibly. Choosing a product with a FSC logo signifies that the product is environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable.
When it comes to wood, paper and other forest-based products, FSC certification is the sustainable choice you can trust. It delivers better outcomes for forests, people and markets – today and for future generations.
